5th International Scholarly Congress: The State of Research on the Multicultural Heritage of the Former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

· Białystok, Supraśl

The Institute for Research on the Cultural Heritage of Europe and the Polish Historical Society cordially invite you to take part in the 5th International Scholarly Congress entitled “The State of Research on the Multicultural Heritage of the Former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth”, scheduled to take place in Białystok on 29 September – 1 October 2021.

The Congress is a recurring international event whose aim is to summarise research and findings on the heritage of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth now located outside the borders of Poland. The Congress attracts great interest, particularly among art historians, historians, archivists, library and information scientists, heritage inventory specialists and other researchers working on heritage. An important feature of the Congress is the wide range of issues it addresses and its exceptionally multidisciplinary character. As in previous editions of the Congress, the meeting will cover all aspects of the heritage of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and of the noble (Sarmatian) political nation originating both from within and from beyond the borders of present-day Poland. In particular, we wish to highlight the following thematic sections:

– Monuments of material culture outside the present-day borders of Poland (art history, inventorying, conservation and restoration of monuments, protection of cultural property, museology, literary studies, archaeology, ethnography, etc.). – Archival materials and libraries located outside Poland.

– The heritage of Polonia (the Polish diaspora) and of Poles living outside Poland.

This is already the 5th edition of the largest congress in Poland devoted to the cultural heritage of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Previous editions attracted great interest among scholars and practitioners from Poland and abroad. It is important that the Congress brings together representatives of different fields of scholarship. For this reason, from the very beginning the Congress has been attended by art historians, historians, monument conservators, archivists, library and information scientists, heritage inventory specialists and others.

The first edition of the Congress was held in Białystok in 2009. All editions have been co-organised by the University of Białystok (Faculty of History and Sociology, now the Faculty of History and International Relations, University of Białystok). In the parametric evaluation of research units, previous editions of the Congress were recognised as an additional achievement of the unit. Since then, the Congress has been held every 3 years, on the initiative and with the assistance of the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Thanks to the long-standing support of the late Jacek Miler, Director of that Department, the Congress was able to host an ever-growing number of scholars. It was also thanks to him that, by 2020, 14 volumes had been published, documenting on more than 7,000 pages the scholarly work on Polish heritage located outside Poland.

Despite organisational difficulties, the current edition of the Congress is able to take place at all primarily thanks to the support of the Minister of Education and Science, the Minister of Culture, National Heritage and Sport, and the Podlaskie Voivodeship. In 2021 the Congress will be held in Białystok and Supraśl.

Honorary patronage of the Congress has been granted by:

Minister of Education and Science

Minister of Culture, National Heritage and Sport

Director General of the Polish State Archives

The Congress will also feature the opening of an exhibition by Sławomir Wojtkiewicz entitled “Pogranicze” (Borderland).

Venue: University Library, University of Białystok, UwB Campus, ul. Ciołkowskiego 1
